Chapter 17, Problem 34P

For Prob. 17-29 estimate the elongation of the rope if a 7000-lbf loaded mine cart is placed on the cage which weighs 1000 lbf. The results of Prob. 4-7 may be useful.

17-29 A mine hoist uses a 2-in 6 × 19 monitor-steel wire rope. The rope is used to haul loads of 4 tons from the shaft 480 ft deep. The drum has a diameter of 6 ft. the sheaves are of good-quality cast steel, and the smallest is 3 ft in diameter.

  1. (a)   Using a maximum hoisting speed of 1200 ft/min and a maximum acceleration of 2 ft/s2 estimate the stresses in the rope.
  2. (b)   Estimate the various factors of safety.

A typical compound helical spring consists of two coaxial closed coil spring having the following particulars:     Outer spring 1: mean coil diameter = 100 mm                     Wire diameter = 12.5 mm                     No. of turns  = 15     Inner spring 2: mean coil diameter = 75 mm                     No. of turns  = 20Both the springs are of equal initial length when unloaded. Ifthe working stress for each spring is to be same. The modulus of rigidity for the wire material is 80 GPa. Calculate the following:a. Diameter of steel wire for inner spring. b. Stiffness of inner springc. Stiffness of the compound spring. I need answer ASAP. Thank you!
A double-drum winder is used as a stage hoist for the sinking of a vertical shift. The stage is suspended in the vertical shaft by two winding ropes in double purchase, the fixed ends being anchored in the headgear. Each rope has a strength of 890 kN when new, and a mass of 5.38 kg/m. The empty stage has a mass of 18360 kg. The minimum factor of safety permitted for ropes is 5 at discard, but allowance must be made for 5% deterioration before discard. The shaft is being sunk to a depth of 1830 m below the headgear sheaves. Calculate the maximum mass load that can be placed on stage, including persons and material.
(2) A single square thread jackscrew has 2.0TPI. It is to lift 15 tons. The friction radius of the collar is 1-in. The coefficient of friction between the threads and screws and base is 0.15, that between the screw and collar is 0.13. Determine: (a) the diameter of the root of the screw if the allowable stress in compression is 6,000psi; (b) the pull required at the end of 5.0ft bar to raise the load; (c) the twisting moment exerted at the root of the threads; (d) the efficiency of the screw and collar.
