Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation: Three resonance structures of naphthalene have to be drawn and the reason for why
Concept Introduction:
Resonance is an electron displacement effect for stabilizing a molecule through delocalization of bonding electrons in the pi orbital.
Delocalized electrons stabilize a compound. The extra stability gains from having delocalized electrons are called resonance stabilization or resonance energy.
Bond length: Bond distance or bond length is the average distance between nuclei of two bonded atoms in a molecule. It is a transferable property of a bond between atoms of fixed types
Double bonds: One sigma bond and one pi bond are together known as a double bond.
Bond length is inversely proportional to the bond order.
A higher bond order results in a shorter bond for a given pair of atoms.
(b)
Interpretation: Five resonance structures of phenanthrene have to be drawn and the bond that has a shorter bond length has to be predicted using resonance structures of phenanthrene.
