Concept introduction: The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland and it is enclosed within a connective tissue capsule. It is located inferior to the thyroid gland cartilage of the larynx and anterior to the trachea. It contains two lobes, namely left lobe and right lobe. Both the left and right lobes are highly vascularized and are connected by an isthmus. The thyroid grand consists of thyroid follicles. Each follicular wall is formed by simple cuboidal epithelial cells (follicular cells). The lumen of each thyroid follicle is filled with protein-rich fluid called colloid.
