To describe: The experiment that proves the given hypothesis.
Hypothesis: “The female hormone estrogen activates genes controlled by androgen in prostate cancer cells”.
Introduction:
Androgen and estrogen are sex steroid hormones. They control the expression of male and female sexual characters, respectively. They function by binding and activating the intracellular receptors. These receptors act as ligand-dependent–specific transcription factors that stimulate the transcription of specific genes. Androgens are required for the survival of prostate cancer cells. There are certain prostate cancer cells that survive, despite the treatment that inhibits androgens. Both androgen and estrogen are steroid hormones and follow the same pathway for action. So, it can be hypothesized that estrogen activates genes in prostate cancer cells in the absence of androgen.

- Many cell lines used in medical research were originally derived from cancerous tissue. Why are cancer cells often used for developing cell lines?arrow_forwardScientists are working hard to learn about causes of cancer. It is known that in general terms, cancer-causing agents produce mutations in a variety of genes that control cell reproduction. Cancer can be caused by organisms. For example, when some viruses infect a human cell, the virus DNA inserts itself randomly into the DNA of human cells. Of all the cancer-causing agents to which humans are commonly exposed, tobacco smoke appear to cause the greatest harm. Tobacco is directly responsible for 30% of all cancer deaths in North America. Heavy smoking increases the likelihood of getting lung cancer by 2000%. Passive (second-hand) smoke is less likely to cause cancer. It is about as harmful as all other forms of air pollution. A researcher wants to develop a study to help determine what percentage of smokers will die from cancer caused by tobacco and its smoke. The researcher gathers two groups of subjects and observes them over a long period of time. Identify the manipulated variable…arrow_forward(comprehension) A scientist hypothesized that her vaccine would stimulate the immune system to attack melanoma (skin cancer) tumors and reduce their growth. To test the hypothesis, 100 melanoma patients were injected with the vaccine in a saline solution (Group A) and 100 melanoma patients were injected with only the saline solution (Group B). Which was the experimental group?arrow_forward
- Often, medical researchers use cancer cell lines to study a range of biological processes. Why do you think cancer cell lines might be preferred?arrow_forwardCell differentiation: How would the discovery of DNA and how DNA "works" have changed hiw scientists could research development?arrow_forwardMuch remains unknown about the rapid, uncontrolled growth, or what causes a tumor to metastasize. Scientists do know that cancer cells come from normal healthy cells that have had some type of damage done to the genes that aid in the production of the regulatory proteins for the cell cycle. What causes this damage? a proto-oncogenes b mutations c enzymes d tumor suppressorsarrow_forward
- Abnormal Motor Proteins Cause Kartagener Syndrome An abnormal form of a motor protein called dynein causes Kartagener syndrome, a genetic disorder characterized by chronic sinus and lung infections. Biofilms form in the thick mucus that collects in the airways, and the resulting bacterial activities and inflammation damage tissues. Affected men can produce sperm but are infertile. Some have become fathers after a doctor injects their sperm cells directly into eggs. Review FIGURE 4.21 and FIQURE 4.24, then explain how abnormal dynein could cause the observed effects. FIGURE 4.24 Cross-section of the flagellum of a sperm cell from A a human male affected by Kartagener syndrome and B an unaffected male.arrow_forwardIn 2005, researcher Woo-suk Hwang reported that he had made immortal stem cells from human patients. His research was hailed as a breakthrough for people affected by degenerative diseases, because stem cells may be used to repair a persons own damaged tissues. Hwang published his results in a peer-reviewed journal. In 2006, the journal retracted his paper after other scientists discovered that Hwangs group had faked their data. Does the incident show that results of scientific studies cannot be trusted? Or does it confirm the usefulness of a scientific approach, because other scientists discovered and exposed the fraud?arrow_forwardIn 2005, researcher Woo-suk Hwang reported that he had made immortal stem cells from human patients. - Stem cells: What do you think the NOVA scienceNOW correspondent meant when he described taking an ordinary skin cellband turning back its genetic clock?arrow_forwardBPA is a chemical compound that has historically been used in themanufacture of plastic products. However, cells often mistake BPAcompounds for hormones that accelerate the cell cycle. Because ofthis, BPA is associated with an increased risk of certain cancers. Question: Why do you think that very small concentrations of BPA mighthave a large effect on the cell?arrow_forwardStem Cell ResearchThe inner cell mass in a blastocyst is pluripotent. Pluripotency means that each one of the cells is capable of differentiating into any type of cell in the human body. These pluripotent cells can be used to create any cells, tissues, or organs in the body. They can replace organs without the patients having to worry about organ rejection or taking immune-suppressing medication for the rest of their lives in order to reduce the chance of organ rejection. The pluripotent cells can also be used to help those with diabetes, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, or cancer, among many of diseases. There are several different sources of pluripotent cells. The best and most reliable source is the stem cells from an embryo. There are other types of stem cells such as induced pluripotent cells and embryonic stem cells created through various processes. In Canada, unused embryos from an in vitro fertilization procedure may be donated for stem cell research. However, the gamete…arrow_forward
