Interpretation:
Need to explain the corrosion resistance of steel coated with tin and zinc, upon scratching and exposing towards electrolyte.
Concept introduction:
Electro-chemical interaction of metal with the non-metals present in environment resulted in the deformation of the metal surface is called corrosion. Generally they are converted from metal state to oxide, hydroxide or sulfides, and found to be more stable in it than pure metal state. In case of uncoated-steel, Fe act as anode and release two and undergoes oxidization to produce Fe2+. Generally corrosion was accelerated by warm temperature, water and salts. The half-cell reaction for corrosion can be written as follows.
Galvanization and tin coating are much important method used to protect iron from corrosion.

- An electrolysis experiment is performed to determine the value of the Faraday constant (number of coulombs per mole of electrons). In this experiment, 28.8 g of gold is plated out from a AuCN solution by running an electrolytic cell for two hours with a current of 2.00 A. What is the experimental value obtained for the Faraday Constant?arrow_forwardThe mass of three different metal electrodes, each from a different galvanic cell, were determined before and after the current generated by the oxidation-reduction reaction in each cell was allowed to flow for a few minutes. The first metal electrode, given the label A, was found to have increased in mass; the second metal electrode, given the label B, did not change in mass; and the third metal electrode, given the label C, was found to have lost mass. Make an educated guess as to which electrodes were active and which were inert electrodes, and which were anode(s) and which were the cathode(s).arrow_forwardFor each reaction listed, determine its standard cell potential at 25 C and whether the reaction is spontaneous at standard conditions. - a Calculate G for the following cell reaction: Tl(s)Tl+(aq)Pb2+(aq)Pb(s) The Gf for Tl+(aq) is 32.4 kJ/mol. b From G, calculate the standard cell potential for the cell reaction and from this, determine the standard potential for Tl2+(aq)+eTl(s).arrow_forwardA half-cell that consists of a copper wire in a 1.00 M Cu(NO3)2 solution is connected by a salt bridge to a solution that is 1.00 M in both Pu3+ and Pu4+, and contains an inert metal electrode. The voltage of the cell is 0.642 V, with the copper as the negative electrode. (a) Write the half-reactions and the overall equation for the spontaneous chemical reaction. (b) Use the standard potential of the copper half-reaction, with the voltage of the cell, to calculate the standard reduction potential for the plutonium half-reaction.arrow_forwardAssume the following electrochemical cell simulates the galvanic cell formed by copper and zinc in seawater at pH 7.90 and 25 C. Zn | Zn(OH)2(s) | OH(aq) || Cu(OH)2(s) | Cu(s) a. Write a balanced equation for the reaction that occurs at the cathode. b. Write a balanced equation for the reaction that occurs at the anode. c. Write a balanced chemical equation for the overall reaction. d. Determine the potential (in volts) of the cell.arrow_forward
