Concept explainers
It is a method of cost accounting, which is used where the production is continuous, and the product needs various processes to complete. This method is used to ascertain the cost of the product at each process or stage of production.
Direct materials cost
Manufacturing products arise with raw materials that are altered into finished products. The cost of any material that is an important part of the finished product is categorized as a direct materials cost.
Conversion cost
Cost of changing the materials into a finished product. It includes direct labor

- The Converting Department of Worley Company had 2,400 units in work in process at the beginning of the period, which were 35% complete. During the period, 10,800 units were completed and transferred to the Packing Department. There were 1,900 units in process at the end of the period, which were 60% complete. Direct materials are placed into the process at the beginning of production. Determine the number of equivalent units of production with respect to direct materials and conversion costs.arrow_forwardThe Converting Department of Tender Soft Tissue Company uses the weighted average method and had 1,900 units in work in process that were 60% complete at the beginning of the period. During the period, 15,800 units were completed and transferred to the Packing Department. There were 1,200 units in process that were 30% complete at the end of the period. a. Determine the number of whole units to be accounted for and to be assigned costs for the period. b. Determine the number of equivalent units of production for the period. Assume that direct materials are placed in process during production.arrow_forwardK-Briggs Company uses the FIFO method to account for the costs of production. For Crushing, the first processing department, the following equivalent units schedule has been prepared: The cost per equivalent unit for the period was as follows: The cost of beginning work in process was direct materials, 40,000; conversion costs, 30,000. Required: 1. Determine the cost of ending work in process and the cost of goods transferred out. 2. Prepare a physical flow schedule.arrow_forward
- A production department within a company received materials of $10,000 and conversion costs of $10,000 from the prior department. It added material of $27,200 and conversion costs of $53,000. The equivalent units are 20,000 for material and 18,000 for conversion. What is the unit cost for materials and conversion?arrow_forwardGiven the following information, determine the equivalent units of ending work in process for materials and conversion under the weighted-average method: beginning inventory of 2,500 units is 100% complete with regard to materials and 60% complete with regard to conversion 18,000 units were started during the period 17,500 units were completed and transferred ending inventory is 100% complete with materials and 65% complete with conversionarrow_forwardVexar manufactures nails. Manufacturing is a one-step process where the nails are forged. This is the information related to this years production: Â Ending inventory was 100% complete as to materials and 70% complete as to conversion, and the total materials cost is $115,080 and the total conversion cost is $72,072. Using the weighted-average method, what are the unit costs if the company transferred out 34,000 units? Using the weighted-average method, prepare the companys process cost summary for the month.arrow_forward
- There were 2,400 units in ending work in process inventory that were 100% complete with regard to material and 25% complete with regard to conversion costs. Ending work in process inventory had a cost of $9,000 and a per-unit material cost of $2. What was the conversion cost per unit using the weighted-average method?arrow_forwardArdt-Barger has a beginning work in process inventory of 5.500 units and transferred in 25,000 units before ending the month with 3.000 u flits that were 100% complete with regard to materials and 80% complete with regard to conversion costs. The cost per unit of material is $5.45, and the cost per unit for conversion is $6.20 per unit, Using the weighted-average method, prepare the companys process cost summary for the month.arrow_forwardLamont Company produced 80,000 machine parts for diesel engines. There were no beginning or ending work-in-process inventories in any department. Lamont incurred the following costs for May: Required: 1. Calculate the costs transferred out of each department. 2. Prepare the journal entries corresponding to these transfers. Also, prepare the journal entry for Grinding that reflects the costs added to the transferred-in goods received from Molding. 3. What if the Grinding Department had an ending WIP of 12,000? Calculate the cost transferred out and provide the journal entry that would reflect this transfer. What is the effect on finished goods calculated in Requirement 1, assuming the other two departments have no ending WIP?arrow_forward
- Selected information from Hernandez Corporation shows the following: Prepare journal entries to record the following: raw material purchased direct labor incurred depreciation expense (hint: this is part of manufacturing overhead) raw materials used overhead applied on the basis of $0.50 per machine hour the transfer from department 1 to department 2arrow_forwardRexar had 1,000 units in beginning inventory before starting 9.500 units and completing 8,000 units. The beginning work in process inventory consisted of $5,000 in materials and $8,500 in conversion costs before $16,000 of materials and $18,500 of conversion costs were added during the month. The ending WIP inventory was 100% complete with regard to materials and 40% complete with regard to conversion costs. Prepare the journal entry to record the transfer of inventory from the manufacturing department to the finished goods department.arrow_forwardSelected information from Skylar Studios shows the following: Prepare journal entries to record the following: raw material purchased direct labor incurred depreciation expense (hint: this is part of manufacturing overhead) raw materials used overhead applied on the basis of $0.50 per machine hour the transfer from department 1 to department 2arrow_forward
