Chapter 18, Problem 26P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The structures that clearly indicate the stereochemistry of the given compounds has to be drawn.

Concept Introduction:

Stereochemistry is defined as the arrangement of molecule in three-dimensional space and its impact on a chemical reaction.

The use of prefix E and Z depends upon the location of the priority of the groups that are associated with each of them. The priority order depends upon the atomic number of the elements. If two higher priority groups are present on the opposite side, then the isomer is known as E isomer but if these groups are present on the same side, then it is Z isomer.

Drawing on what you know about the stereochemistry of alkene addition reactions, a. write the mechanism for the reaction of 2-butyne with one equivalent of Br2. b. predict the configuration of the product of the reaction.
5. Compound A, C 10H 18O, undergoes reaction with dilute H 2SO 4 at 50 °C to yield a mixture of two alkenes, C 10H 16.  The major alkene B, gives only cyclopentanone after ozone treatment followed by reduction with zinc in acetic acid.  Which of the following reactions are correct.
The bicyclic alkene P can be prepared by thermal electrocyclic ring closure from cyclodecadiene Q or by photochemical electrocyclic ring closure from cyclodecadiene R. Draw the structures of Q and R, and indicate the stereochemistry of the process by which each reaction occurs.
