Interpretation:
The correct statement out of the given statements related to the reaction of substituted diphenyl
Concept Introduction:
During the Baeyer Villiger oxidation of ketones, an oxygen atom is inserted between the carbonyl group and one of the carbons attached to it. The product formed is an ester.
Usually, the oxygen atom is inserted between the carbonyl and the larger of the two groups attached to the carbonyl.
The ketone is converted to the conjugate acid of the ester. Further hydrolysis of the conjugate acid forms the ester.
The peroxy acid used is converted to the corresponding carboxylic acid.
The electron releasing groups on the substituent increase the rate of migration while electron withdrawing groups decrease the rate of migration.

- The base-promoted rearrangement of an -haloketone to a carboxylic acid, known as the Favorskii rearrangement, is illustrated by the conversion of 2-chlorocyclohexanone to cyclopentanecarboxylic acid. It is proposed that NaOH first converts the a-haloketone to the substituted cyclopropanone shown in brackets and then to the sodium salt of cyclopentanecarboxylic acid. (a) Propose a mechanism for base-promoted conversion of 2-chlorocyclohexanone to the proposed intermediate. (b) Propose a mechanism for base-promoted conversion of the proposed intermediate to sodium cyclopentanecarboxylate.arrow_forwardThe compound 3,5,5-trimethyl-2-cyclohexenone can be synthesized using acetone and ethyl acetoacetate as sources of carbon atoms. New carbon-carbon bonds in this synthesis are formed by a combination of aldol reactions and Michael reactions. Show reagents and conditions by which this synthesis might be accomplished.arrow_forwardThe Dess–Martin reaction reacts an alcohol with the Dess–Martin periodinane. The first step displaces one of the acetate groups on the periodinane with the alcohol. A base then deprotonates one of the alpha protons, forming a new carbonyl bond, iodinane and acetic acid. The oxidation stops at this stage to give the aldehyde. Both Swern and Dess–Martin conditions will also convert a secondary alcohol to a ketone. Now apply what has just been discussed. Draw the major organic product.arrow_forward
- The reaction that occurs when the benzaldehyde you have is reacted in a basic environment is called the Cannizzaro reaction, and when it is reacted with cyanide, it is called benzoin. It Explain the reason by writing the reaction mechanisms of the reactions.arrow_forwardThe following questions pertain to the esters shown and behavior under conditions of the Claisen condensation.(a) Two of these esters are converted to β-keto esters in good yield on treatment with sodium ethoxide and subsequent acidification of the reaction mixture. Which two are these? Write the structure of the Claisen condensation product of each one. (b) One ester is capable of being converted to a β-keto ester on treatment with sodium ethoxide, but the amount of β-keto ester that can be isolated after acidification of the reaction mixture is quite small. Which ester is this? (c) One ester is incapable of reaction under conditions of the Claisen condensation. Which one? Why?arrow_forwardWhat functional group would be present in the product (the main organic product) of a reaction between a ketone and a Grignard reagent (with an acidic workup/quench)? Be specific (primary, secondary, tertiary).arrow_forward
- On synthesis of esters via nucleophilic acyl substitution: How is excess alcohol eliminated from the crude product? Write the chemical equation involved in the reaction between the excess acid and NaHCO3. Given this, briefly explain why NaHCO3 is preferred over NaOH for the neutralization of excess acid.arrow_forwardEarly organic chemists used the Hofmann elimination reaction as the last step of a process known as a Hofmann degradation—a method used to identify amines. In a Hofmann degradation, an amine is methylated with excess methyl iodide in a basic solution, treated with silver oxide to convert the quaternary ammonium iodide to a quaternary ammonium hydroxide, and then heated to allow it to undergo a Hofmann elimination. Once the alkene product is identified, working backward gives the structure of the amine. Identify the amine in each of the following cases: a. 4-Methyl-2-pentene is obtained from the Hofmann degradation of a primary amine. b. 3-Methyl-1-butene is obtained from the Hofmann degradation of a primary amine. c. 2-Methyl-1-3-butadiene is obtained from two successive Hofmann degradations of a secondary amine.arrow_forwardAn esterification and a claisen condensation are the reverse of each other. Write a single equilibrium reaction that is appropriate for both reactions and discuss the experimental conditions that can drive this equilibrium toward one side or the other of this reaction. The reactions are: Esterification Reaction: acetic acid is reacted with methanol and sulfuric acid catalyst under heated conditions to produce methyl acetate. Claisen Condensation: methyl acetate is reacted with water and sulfuric acid catalyst under heated conditions to produce acetic acidarrow_forward
- Some alcohols undergo rearrangement or other unwanted side reactions when they dehydrate in acid. Alcohols may be dehydrated under mildly basic conditions using phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3) in pyridine. The alcohol reacts with phosphorus oxychloride much like it reacts with tosyl chloride, displacing a chloride ion from phosphorus to give an alkyl dichlorophosphate ester. The dichlorophosphate group is an outstanding leaving group. Pyridine reacts as a base with the dichlorophosphate ester to give an E2 elimination. Propose a mechanism for the dehydration of cyclohexanol by POCl3 in pyridine.arrow_forwardAcetal formation is a characteristic reaction of aldehydes and ketones, but not of carboxylic acids. Use retrosynthetic analysis to show how you could use a cyclic acetal protecting group in the following synthesis, then write equations for the procedure showing the necessary reagents.arrow_forwardIf in the Grignard synthesis of benzoic acid a student determined that his crude product was a mixture of benzoic acid and bromobenzene, map out a series of extractions using the following solvents and solutions to get pure benzene or its salt in an ether solution.
