Chapter 18, Problem 38P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The synthesis of benzophenone from the given starting materials and any necessary inorganic reagents is to be described.

Concept introduction:

Friedal Craft acylation is an electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction. In this reaction, synthesis of monoacylated product takes place from the reaction between aromatic rings and acyl chlorides.

Grignard reagents are acidic. On reaction with water, they produce alkanes. The inorganic product Mg(OH)Br is referred to as basic bromide.

Pyridinium chlorochromate is an oxidising agent which can be used to stop the oxidation of the alcohols to aldehydes or ketones. Primary alcohols on reaction with pyridinium chlorochromate produce aldehydes, while secondary alcohols give ketones.

Aldehydes react with diols to form hemiacetals. This reaction takes place in the presence of an acid.

Alkenes, on reaction with ozone which is followed by reduction with Zn in the presence of acetic acid, give carbonyl compounds.

The sex attractant of the housefly has the formula C23H46. When treated with warm potassium permanganate, this pheromone gives two products: CH3(CH2)12COOH and CH3(CH2)7COOH. Suggest a structure for this sex attractant. Explainwhich part of the structure is uncertain
the organic compound 2-heptanone, belonging to the ketone family, is responsible for the strong penetrating odor in Roquefort cheeses. Starting from acetylene as the starting reagent, propose a synthesis line with the reaction mechanisms involved for the synthetic obtaining of 2-heptanone and use it as a food additive in analogous cheeses.
