Explanation of Solution

a) In Vons tortilla chips,

Fats have a high calorific value, that is, up to 9 Cal/g. Carbohydrates and proteins have calorific values equal to 4 Cal/g each. Fiber has almost nil or 0 Cal/g calorific value.

The number of calories in each product can be calculated as follows:

Fat                                7 g×9 Cal/g= 63 CalProtein                         2 g×4 Cal/g=   8 CalCarbohydrate              16 g×4 Cal/g= 64 Cal      _Total                                                        135cal

Thus, the total number of calories obtained is 135cal.

The percentage of fats can be calculated as:

% of fats=Calories obtained from fatsCalories obtained from the food×100

Substitute 63 Cal for calories obtained from fats and 135 Cal for calories obtained from food in the above formula as follows:

% of fats=63 Cal135 Cal×100=0.466×100=47 %

Therefore, the percentage of calories obtained from fatsis 47 %.

b) In Nutri-gain cereal,

The number of calories in each product can be calculated as follows:
