Concept explainers
To discuss:
The circulatory system and the differences between the circulatory system and the cardiovascular system.
Introduction:
The circulatory system’s main function is the transport of substances between locations within the body. These substances include gases, which are dissolved in the liquid medium of blood and are absorbed by the lungs or are meant to be excreted out of the body; nutritive substances absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; substances produced as waste byproducts from tissues that are meant to be transported to organs like the kidneys for excretion; hormones intended to exert their effects at sites distant from where they are secreted; and various stem cells that originate in the bone marrow and are intended to various tissues where they settle and develop.
