To discuss:
Three ways of quantifying blood RBC and hemoglobin levels, provide their definitions and units of measurements, and give reasons for differences in levels among males and females.
Introduction:
Blood parameters, including cell counts and levels of substances in blood, indicate the current state of an individual’s health, and therefore, measuring blood parameters is a vital part of clinical diagnosis of various medical conditions. RBC and hemoglobin levels specifically indicate the oxygen-
Standard methods of measuring blood RBC and hemoglobin levels in combination with test results reported in standard units help draw quick conclusions from lab reports. The mean RBC count in males is between 4.6 and 6.2 million/µL; that in females is between 4.2 and 5.4 million/µL. Hemoglobin levels in males range from 13–18 g/dL and in females range from 12–16 g/dL. The hematocrit, that is, the packed cell volume is between 42% and 52% in males and between 37% and 48% in females.
