The requirement is a to convert an o-dihydroxy group to an epoxide and to introduce an allyl group para to one hydroxyl group and meta to another hydroxyl group. The epoxide ring is formed when the dihydroxy phenol is first treated with NaH and then with methylene bromide. When the epoxide is treated with allyl chloride in the presence of AlCl3, the allyl group gets introduced into the benzene ring.
