Chapter 19, Problem 19.2P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Whether tungsten or a deuterium lamp has to be used to get 300 nm radiation has to be identified.

Concept Introduction:

In electromagnetic radiation, the key radiations are gamma rays, ultraviolet and UV visible light and infrared radiation. The range of wavelength for theses radiations are as follows:

RadiationWavelength-range(m)Gamma rays1012-1010X-rays1010-108Ultraviolet108-4×107Visible light4×107-7×107Infrared106-102Microwaves102-1Radiowaves1-104

One of the key components of double-beam instruments is light source of visible and ultraviolet radiation. Tungsten lamp that has filament at around 3000 K is preferred in ultraviolet spectroscopy while deuterium lamp is more appropriate for visible and region near infrared radiation.

Besides these two lamps, other sources include electric discharge that comprise of gases such as mercury vapor or xenon.
