In terms of the LEED pattern, the farther apart the aton1s responsible for the pattern, the closer the spots appear in the pattern. Twice the separation between the aton1s corresponds to half the separation between the spots, and vice versa.  When the vertical separation between two atoms is tripled, then the spots are thrice closer than after reconstruction.  The LEED pattern is given by
