Summary Introduction

Introduction

Demographic transition asserts that a stable ratio of births to deaths is reached once a certain level of economic prosperity has been achieved. Stage 1 is found in traditional societies in which birth rates and death rates are both high, as is the infant mortality rate. Stage 2 is when the death rate falls and the birth rate remains high. Stage 3 is when the birth rate and death rate are again stable. A second demographic transition happens when birth rates continue to decline due to changes in family structure.
