Chapter 19, Problem 4WWTS
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
Heartbeat is an involuntary action, controlled by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The autonomic nervous system is classified into two divisions: sympathetic and parasympathetic system. The sympathetic nervous system increases the heartbeat at the time of flight and fight stress. The parasympathetic nervous system decreases the heartbeat at the time of rest and digestion.

The ____________ nerves innervate the heart and tend to reduce the heart rate.
Sympathetic stimulation increases the phosphorylation of the Ca2+ATPase in the sarcoplasmic reticulum. What effect does this have on cardiac function?
It increases the rate of diastoleÂ
It decreases the stretch of the ventricles
The rate of systole decreases
Fill in the blank:Â
Endings of parasympathetic nerve fibers secrete _______________________, which causes the heart rate todecrease.
