City traffic engineers in Canmore are doing an intersection traffic survey. On Tuesday, a counter placed at the intersection of Armstrong Place and Three Sisters Blvd. registered the following counts: morning. 2,594; afternoon. 2,478; and evening. 1,863.

a. Round each number to the nearest hundred and add to get an *estimate* of the traffic count for the day.

b. What was the *exact* amount of traffic for the day?

**Given Information:**

The city traffic engineers in canmore are doing an intersection traffic survey and they registered the counts of traffic in morning as in morning 2,594 in afternoon 2,478 and in evening 1,863.

**Formula used:**

Addition of any whole number can be done by the use following steps:

Step1: first write the provided whole numbers in columns so that place values of units, tens,

hundreds, thousands and so on is lined up.

Step2: add the digits in each column starting from the right.

Step3: when the total of the column is greater than 9, write the unit digit in that column and carry the tens digit to the top of the next left column.

Rounding off any whole number is done by the use of the following steps:

Step1: first find out the place to which the number is to be rounded.

Step2: now if the digit to the right of the place being rounded is 5 or more, increase the digit in that place by 1.

Step3: if the digit to the right of the place being rounded is 4or less do not change the digit in the place being rounded.

Step4: change all digits to the right of the place which is going to rounded to zeros...
