Chapter 2, Problem 10CT
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The reason why triple bonds are stronger and more difficult to break than single covalent bonds by referring to the stability of a valence shell that contains eight electrons.

Introduction:

Sharing of paired electrons between atoms in order to fill valance shells is called chemical bonds. These paired electrons are termed as shared pairs or bonded pairs. Chemical bonds are formed by sharing or transferring of electrons. Chemical bonds are metabolic bonds, covalent bonds, and ionic bonds.

“Covalent bond” is an attractive and a repulsive force between two atoms that are sharing one or more electron pairs. The atoms whose outer electron shells are full are the most stable atoms. The shell that is present far away from its nucleus is known as an outermost shell and electrons present in it is called “outermost electrons or valence electrons”.

When two atoms share a pair of valence electrons with different levels of electronegativity, what type of bond is this?
Chlorine is an element with the symbol Cl. Draw and label atomic structure of chlorine indicating the number and locations of protons, neutrons and electrons in one atom of chlorine.
