Chapter 2, Problem 13CRQ
Summary Introduction

Introduction: Fatty acids are long chains of carbon atoms that are bound to hydrogen with a carboxyl or acid group at one end of the chain. The saturated fatty acids have no double bonds between carbon, and they are known to be saturated with hydrogen. On the contrary, the unsaturated fatty acids have one or more double bonds between carbons. For each double bond, the molecule has two fewer hydrogen atoms attached to the carbon chain.

Students have asked these similar questions
Name the following fatty acids by the symbol (C:B)
Why do unsaturated fatty acids have lower melting points than their saturated counterparts? What is relationship of the degree of unsaturation and melting or boiling point?
Identify the following fatty acids present in fats and oils by their common names.            Which  is the most abundant fatty acid?   What is the general formula of a saturated fatty acid?
