A major source of the CO2 that causes ocean acidification is emissions from coal burning power plants. One way to reduce these emissions is to use nuclear power to produce electricity. The proponents of nuclear power contend that it is the only way that the U.S. can increase its energy production while reducing air pollution because nuclear power plants emit few airborne pollutants. What are some of the benefits of nuclear power? What are the possible costs and dangers? Should we increase our use of nuclear power to generate electricity? If a new power plant were to be built near your home, would you prefer it to be a coal-burning plant or a nuclear plant? Explain.

- Which of the following statements is not correct? a. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. b. Energy cannot change from one form to another. c. Energy tends to disperse spontaneously. d. Energy can be transferred.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is True about ocean ecosystems?a. Surface waters typically have abundant sunlight but lowlevels of nutrients.b. Because there isn’t enough sunlight for photosynthesis, deep waters typically have no life.c. Surface waters in the open ocean have the highestproductivity.d. Life near hydrothermal vents relies on photosynthesisfor energy.arrow_forwardWhy do the electrons in water and carbon dioxide have so little chemical energy? Because there are oxygen atoms in these molecules. The high electronegativity of oxygen pulls the electrons to low energy levels. Because they are the end products of cellular respiration and this is the only place where these molecules are produced. Because animals and plants release carbon dioxide and water into the atmosphere. All of the abovearrow_forward
- Which one of the following statements is false? Group of answer choices Water plays the main role in the increase in the mean global temperature referred to as global warming. Water does not cause global warming because the atmospheric lifetime of water vapor is short. The amount of energy absorbed when water evaporates is large due to its strong intermolecular forces. Water absorbs the greatest percentage of infrared radiation being emitted by the earth. The energy when released water condenses heats the atmosphere and fuels storms.arrow_forwardWhich of the following statements accurately describes water vapor? The liquid phase of water is water vapor Water vapor is the water's solid phase. Water vapor is water in its gaseous state All of the above The zone composed of air, water, and soil is referred to as Atmosphere Biosphere Hydrosphere Lithosphere 3.Do greenhouse gases serve any purpose on Earth? No, they merely block a portion of the Sun's rays. They do, in fact, keep the Earth warm. Yes, they do maintain all of the gases on our planet in place. No, they merely contribute to catastrophic climate change.arrow_forwardAnswer the question Briefly 1.) Is rain water safe to drinks? Why? 2.) Now that we are experiencing global climate change, what do you think will happen to polar caps and glaciers? What will be the effect of these to Islands? 3.) Why are trees needed in the watershed? 4.) Why are dams destructive to the watershed? 5.) What are the worst effect of fertilizers to our water system? 6.) Does mining contribute to watershed? 7.) How does aeration help us improve water quality? 8.) If we build septic tanks, how far should it be from the pump well? Why? 9.) Where do you find radon? 10.) How can be avoid runoff contaminants?arrow_forward
- In a pond ecosystem, mosquito larvae feed on photosynthetic algae. Other larvae, such as dragonfly larvae, feed on the mosquito larvae. The dragonfly larvae are, in turn, consumed by fish, whichcan be preyed upon by raccoons. How many different organisms in this ecosystem get their energy from the food they consume?1. One2.TWO3.Three4.Fourarrow_forwardWhich of has following group of gases contribute to the 'Green House Effect' ? Carbon tetrafluoride and Nitrous oxide Carbon monoxide and Sulphur dioxide Ammonia and Ozone Carbon dioxide and Methanearrow_forwardIn the water cycle, what happens during evaporation? Group of answer choices a. liquid water changes to water vapor b. water flows over the ground c. water vapor changes to liquid water d. water falls to the ground from cloudsarrow_forward
- What are Coal Power and Renewable Energy? Which type of energy is more polluting? Why are we still using coal power? Which type of power are we using more of? What other interesting facts are there about this industry? How and why does the government protect this industry?arrow_forwardImagine that humans have significantly reduced the amount of greenhouse gas emissions on Earth, but the planet is still warming due to past emissions. How might solar radiation management be implemented to rapidly cool the planet and prevent further impacts of climate change? a. aerosols can be removed from clouds to decrease the amount of cloud condensation nuclei b. sulfur dioxide can be injected into the stratosphere to decrease albedo c. sulfur dioxide can be injected into the atmosphere to increase albedo d. shipping can be regulated to reduce the cloud condensation nuclei of ship tracksarrow_forwardSome cities have strict controls in place to address stormwater pollution and are working to separate storm sewers from sewer systems that carry human waste. Do you think it is fair for a city to pass such ordinances to protect water quality and ensure an adequate water supply?arrow_forward
