Chapter 2, Problem 2.23QP

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Two metals less dense than water has to be found out.

Concept introduction:

  • Periodic table is the table that shows the elements which are represented by various symbols, their atomic number, average atomic mass… and elements with similar chemical properties are grouped together.
  • Atomic number of the element is equal the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which is the characteristic of a chemical element and determines the place of corresponding element in the periodic table.
  • Weight of the substance per its unit volume will give its density. And the unit of density is g/mm or g/cm3.
  • Density of water is the weight of water per its unit volume. And its density is 1g/cm3.
  • A metal is good conductor of heat and electricity. In periodic table most of the elements are metals.
  • Non-metals are poor heat and electricity conductor compared with metals.  In the periodic table, 17 elements are classified as non-metals.

(b)

(c)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The densest known solid metallic element has to be given.

(d)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The densest known solid nonmetallic element from the given site of periodic table of elements has to be given.

Concept introduction:

  • Periodic table is the table that shows the elements which are represented by various symbols, their atomic number, average atomic mass… and elements with similar chemical properties are grouped together.
