Florida, like several other states, has passed a law that prohibits “price gouging” immediately before, during, or after the declaration of a state of emergency. Price gouging is defined as “selling necessary commodities such as food, gas, ice, oil, and lumber at a price that grossly exceeds the average selling price for the 30 days prior to the emergency.” Many consumers attempt to stock up on emergency supplies, such as bottled water, immediately before and after a hurricane or other natural disaster hits an area. Also, many supply shipments to retailers are interrupted during a natural disaster. Assuming that the law is strictly enforced, what are the economic effects of the price gouging statute? Explain carefully.
The market for organic and locally sourced foods has skyrocketed over the past decade as consumers focus on improving their eating habits. However, severe droughts have caused organic food prices to rise significantly, forcing many consumers to shop at conventional supermarkets (which are increasingly adding organic food options) instead of organic food markets such as Whole Foods. In response, companies such as Whole Foods have begun offering more nonorganic options on their store shelves in order to provide their consumers with more affordable options. Based on this response, what did companies such as Whole Foods realize about the elasticity of demand for organic foods that caused them to lower their prices by changing the type of foods they sell?
Some have argued that higher cigarette prices do not deter smoking. While there are many arguments both for and against this view, some find the following argument to be the most persuasive of all: “The laws of supply and demand indicate that higher prices are ineffective in reducing smoking. In particular, higher cigarette prices will reduce the demand for cigarettes. This reduction in demand will push the equilibrium price back down to its original level. Since the equilibrium price will remain unchanged, smokers will consume the same number of cigarettes.”Do you agree or disagree with this view?
Disagree - the reduction in demand will push the equilibrium price below its original level.
Disagree - this confuses a change in demand with a change in quantity demanded.
Agree - the price increase will ultimately leave cigarette consumption unchanged.
Disagree - higher cigarette prices will actually increase the demand for cigarettes.

Suppose that the provincial construction supervisor decides to cut the total number of housing inspectors from 20 to 10 in order to decrease the supply of new housing permits. This decrease in the supply of permits raises the equilibrium bribe from $1,000 to $2,500. How much per year will the construction supervisor now receive if he is still getting half of all the bribes collected by the 10 inspectors? How much more is the construction supervisor getting now than when he had 20 inspectors working in part b? Will he personally be happy with the reduction in government services?arrow_forwardWith the COVID-19 epidemic, the demand for ethyl alcohol, which is very important for meeting the hygiene needs, has also increased and the insufficient supply has caused the price of ethyl alcohol to rise suddenly. During this period, the price of ethyl alcohol per liter rose to 400 TL, which caused a serious increase in all disinfectant prices, including cologne. The government, which wants to prevent the consumer from being victimized, limited the price of ethyl alcohol per liter to 150 TL and banned the sale in the market above this price. What does this government practice set an example for? Explain on the figure.arrow_forward
- Harriet McNeil, proprietor of McNeil's Auto Mall, believes that it is good business for her automobile dealership to have more customers on the lot than can be served, as she believes this creates an impression that demand for the automobiles on her lot is high. However, she also understands that if there are far more customers on the lot than can be served by her salespeople, her dealership may lose sales to customers who become frustrated and leave without making a purchase. Ms. McNeil is primarily concerned about the staffing of salespeople on her lot on Saturday mornings (8:00 a.m. to noon), which are the busiest time of the week for McNeil's Auto Mall. On Saturday mornings, an average of 6.8 customers arrive per hour. The customers arrive randomly at a constant rate throughout the morning, and a salesperson spends an average of one hour with a customer. Ms. McNeil's experience has led her to conclude that if there are two more customers on her lot than can be served at any time…arrow_forwardA survey by Namibian statistics agency indicated that kapana is Namibian favourite. People were lined up to get gas in their cars, some even going to the extent of filling containers that were not meant to hold gasoline. Some of you may have participated in the frenzy. Others watched from a distance. In hindsight, the shortage was relatively short lived, and much of it exacerbated by our own actions. (Look up the phrase self-fulfilling prophecy, and you’ll understand what I mean!) A friend of yours, one who lives in a mixed use development near where he works and drives an electric car, thought the behavior of those lining up at the pumps was irrational. After all, people were burning gas waiting in long lines to get gas. To what extent does the evidence support the claim that people were behaving irrationally? Are there other ways to explain the rush for gasoline without…arrow_forward
- Price Ceiling of Low-Cost Homes The Malaysian government has implemented a price ceiling on low-cost homes starting from the year 2010. The implementation of this price ceiling is aimed to ensure that people from the lower income group have one of the necessities, which is shelter. The government has set the price ceiling of low-income houses at RM42,000 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM50,400 in Sabah and Sarawak. Furthermore, in conjunction with the 10th Malaysia plan, the government has planned to develop more houses at an affordable price, involving private developers. The target is to have 161,000 affordable homes, of which private developers would build 83,000 units while the rest would be built by the government.Due to the implementation of this price ceiling, the legal maximum price of low-income houses set by the government is lower than the market equilibrium price. This is done in order to protect the interest of consumers by preventing the producers from charging prices that…arrow_forwardScenario Between recalls on mass-produced commercial dog food and a general understanding of the benefits of a healthier diet for pets, the demand for natural or organic dog food is experiencing a significant increase. How does Wanda's strategy of being a high-quality provider take advantage of the shifts in consumer demand for healthy dog treats? 2. Also, Government policy restricting the seating capacity of restaurants resulted in a drastic decline in the number of people dining in restaurants. As the number of COVID-19 cases is steadily decreasing, the government has removed the restriction and, in addition, offered adults in every household a $40 dining voucher to pay part of their restaurant bills. What would be the short-term impact of the government’s $40 dining voucher policy on the equilibrium price and quantity of restaurant meals? Assume that the restaurant industry is competitive and currently in long-run equilibrium. Illustrate your answer with either DIAGRAM A or DIAGRAM B.arrow_forward
- According to an article in China Daily, China recently accelerated its plan to privatize tens of thousands of state-owned firms. Imagine that you are an aide to a senator on the Foreign Relations Committee of the U.S. Senate, and you have been asked to help the committee determine the price and quantity that will prevail when competitive forces are allowed to equilibrate the market. The best estimates of the market demand and supply for the good (in U.S. dollar equivalent prices) are given by: Qd=12 -2P and Qs=-4 + 2P, respectively. a. Determine the competitive equilibrium price and quantity b. Based on your answer to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in question (2a), one of the senators raises a concern that the free market price might be too high for the typical Chinese citizen to pay. Accordingly, she asks you to explain what would happen if the Chinese government privatized the market, but then set a price at the Chinese equivalent of $3.00. How do you answer?
