Chapter 2, Problem 44AP

A possible practical way to eliminate oxides of nitrogen(such as NO 2 ) from automobile exhaust gases uses cyanuricacid, C 3 N 3 ( OH ) 3 . When heated to the relatively lowtemperature of 625°F, cyanuric acid converts to gaseousisocyanic acid (HNCO). Isocyanic acid reacts with NO 2 inthe exhaust to form nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water, all of which are normal constituents of the air.

(a) Write balanced equations for these two reactions.

(b) If the process described earlier became practical, howmuch cyanuric acid (in kilograms) would be requiredto absorb the 1 . 7 × 1 0 1 0  kg NO 2 generated annuallyin auto exhaust in the United States?

Limestone rocks are composed mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) that reacts easily with       an acid, releasing carbon dioxide gas.
The fat stored in a camel’s hump is a source of both energy andwater. Calculate the mass of H2O produced by the metabolismof 1.0 kg of fat, assuming the fat consists entirely of tristearin1C57H110O62, a typical animal fat, and assuming that during metabolism, tristearin reacts with O2 to form only CO2 and H2O.
