Concept introduction:
Conjugate acid and base: If a base receives one proton, then the formed species is a conjugate acid whereas an acid lose one proton, then the formed species is a conjugated base.
If an acid lose one proton, then the formed species is a conjugated base. Weak base forms stronger conjugated acid.
If electronegative atoms are attached to a species, it causes inductive electron withdrawal. It stabilizes its conjugate base thus increases the strength of the acid.
Inductive electron withdrawal: An electron-withdrawing group increases the strength of an acid. As the electronegativity of the electron-withdrawing group increases, or as an electron-withdrawing atom moves closer to the acidic hydrogen, the strength of the acid increases.

- Consider acetic acid. What is the net charge on the molecule in a solution of acetic acid at pH of 5.8, 4.8, 8.4 and 1.5. The pKa of acetic acid is 4.8.arrow_forwardExplain why the C-3 OH group of vitamin C is more acidic than the C-2 OH group.arrow_forwardCitrus fruits are rich in citric acid, a compound that has 3 functional groups "carboxylic acid". Explain the following: a) Why is the first pKa (the COOH group at the center of the molecule) less than the pKa of acetic acid? b) Why is the third pKa greater than the pKa of acetic acid?arrow_forward
- If compound A has a ka of 3.0 x 10-11 , compound B has a ka of 1.1 x 10-10 and compound C has a ka of 1.8 x 10-5, which compound is the weakest acid?arrow_forwardthe Ka for acetic acid is 1.8x10^-5. What is the pKa of this weak acid?arrow_forwardCitric acid, a triprotic acid, has 3 pKa values (3.128, 4.761, and 6.396). What is the pKb of trisodium citrate? 1.34 x 10–11 7.604 10.872 9.239arrow_forward
- an anhydride is reacted with the phenol functional group on salicylic acid in the presence of H2SO4 and heat to produce aspirin, a pain reliever that is not as harsh on the stomach lining as straight salicylic acid. This process is called the a. isomerization of salicylic acid b. dehydration of salicylic acid c. purification of aspirin d. esterification of salicylic acidarrow_forwardGiven that C6H11COOH has a pKa = 4.8 and C6H11N+H3 has a pKa = 10.7, (a) What pH would you make the water layer to cause the carboxylic acid to dissolve in the water layer and the amine to dissolve in the ether layer? (b) What pH would you make the water layer to cause the carboxylic acid to dissolve in the ether layer and the amine to dissolve in the water layer?arrow_forwardA naturally occurring amino acid such as alanine has a group that is a carboxylic acid and a group that is a protonated amine. a. If the pKa value of a carboxylic acid such as acetic acid is about 5 (see Table 2.1), then why is the pKa value of the carboxylic acid group of alanine so much lower? b. Draw the structure of alanine in a solution at pH = 0. c. Draw the structure of alanine in a solution at physiological pH (pH 7.4). d. Draw the structure of alanine in a solution at pH = 12. e. Is there a pH at which alanine is uncharged (that is, neither group has a charge)? f. At what pH does alanine have no net charge (that is, the amount of negative charge is the same as the amount of positive charge)?arrow_forward
