Concept explainers
In humans, the ability to bend the thumb back beyond vertical is called hitchhiker's thumb and is dominant to the inability to do so (OMIM 274200; see Problem 41). Also, the presence of attached earlobes is recessive to unattached earlobes (OMIM 128900).
a. Check your own
b. Using all available and willing members of your family, or members of another family if yours is not easily accessible, trace the transmission of both traits in a pedigree. Use allelic symbols H and h for the thumb and E and e for earlobes, and identify the genotypes for each family member as completely as possible. Bring the pedigree back to share with your group.

- A woman without red-green colorblindness and with a normal chin, whose mother was colorblind, marries a cleft-chinned, non-colorblind man whose mother had a normal chin. Recall that red-green colorblindness is sex-linked recessive, but mid-chin fissure (cleft) is autosomal dominant. What are the expected phenotypic ratios of the children? Show your work.arrow_forwardAlmond-shaped (E) eyes is dominant over round eyes. Presence of freckles (F) is also a dominant trait. Medium-sized nose, however, may be inherited if one parent has a large (L) nose and the other has a small (S) nose. Achondroplasia (A) is an autosomal dominant disorder that leads to dwarfism but not lethal.A woman homozygous for normal height, with freckles, almond-shaped eyes, small nose, and Type A blood, has a Type O mother with no freckles and a type AB father with round eyes. She is engaged to a man with achondroplasia, round eyes and medium sized nose. Unlike his father, hismother is of normal height. Both his parents have Type O blood but nobody from both sides of his family has or had freckles. 1.What is the complete genotypes of the man and the woman. Clearly indicate which genotype belongs to whom? 2.Based on their genotypes, what is the probability that they will have:- a child with Achondroplasia?- a child of normal height?- a child with type AB blood?arrow_forwardAlmond-shaped (E) eyes is dominant over round eyes. - What is polygenic inheritance? Discuss the issues that make polygenicinheritance difficult to study.arrow_forward15. The following pedigree shows inheritance of Huntington's disease, a fatal genetic disorder that causes neurodegeneration. Since signs and symptoms usually do not appear until adulthood, many who are carriers may not realize their risk of passing on the disease-causing allele. The following pedigree represents a family in which some people are affected by Huntington's disease. For example, in 4 o’clock flowers the gene for red pigmentation is dominant and the gene for white pigmentation is recessive. However, heterozygotes are pink. The dominant allele does not completely mask expression of the recessive allele: it is incompletely dominant. a. By observing flower color in 4 o’clock flowers, is it possible to unambiguously determine the genotype? YES/NO. Explain your answer. b. Is the same true for flower color in snow peas? YES/NO Why or why not?arrow_forward
- Duchenne muscular dystrophy is sex linked and usually affects only males. Victims of the disease become progressively weaker, starting early in life.a. What is the probability that a woman whose brother has Duchenne’s disease will have an affected child?b. If your mother’s brother (your uncle) had Duchenne’s disease, what is the probability that you have received the allele?c. If your father’s brother had the disease, what is the probability that you have received the allele?arrow_forwardA prospective father has two dominant traits dependent on single autosomal genes, cataract (an eye abnormality), which he inherited from his mother, and polydactyly (extra fingers and/or toes), which he inherited from his father. - Purple Hair is dominant. Blue hair is recessive. One parent is heterozygous; the other parent has blue hair. A.) What is the probability of them having a blue-haired child?arrow_forwardIn addition to the allelic pair determining pattern baldness in man (B,b), consider early baldness to be due to another autosomal allele (E) on a different pair of chromosomes and also dominant in males but recessive in females. The phenotype for ee may be late or nonbaldness depending on sex and the genotype for B, b alleles. Two doubly heterozygous persons marry. What is the phenotype of the male parent? What is the phenotype of the female parent? Give the phenotypic ratio expected among male children of couples such as this one. Right handedness (R) is dominant over left (r). A non-tongue rolling, left-handed woman marries a tongue rolling, right-handed man who is heterozygous for both traits. What are the possible genotypes and phenotypes of the offspring? B. A tongue rolling, right-handed man marries a non-tongue rolling, right-handed woman. Their first child is non-tongue rolling and left- handed. What are the genotypes of the parents? Mom: Dad: C. A non-tongue rolling, right-handed man whose mother was left-handed marries a tongue rolling, right- handed woman whose mother was non-tongue rolling and left- handed. What are the possible genotypes and phenotypes of their children? D. In man, a certain type of deaf mutism is recessive. Let (D) be normal and (d) be deaf-mute.
