Question
Chapter 2, Problem 61A
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:A type of property that cannot be observed without changing the composition of a substance should be identified.
Concept Introduction:A type of matter that is composed of specific composition is said to be a substance.
Expert Solution & Answer
Answer to Problem 61A
Chemical property.
Explanation of Solution
There are two types of properties of a substance:
- Physical: A property that is a characteristic of matter and not associated with any change in chemical composition is said to be physical. For example freezing, crushing, and splitting.
- Chemical: A property that is a characteristic of matter and is associated with a change in chemical composition is said to be chemical propertyA change that affects the chemical composition of a substance is said to be a chemical change. This change results in the formation of matter that possesses different composition than the original matter. For example, heating and electricity.
Thus, the type of property that cannot be observed without changing the composition of a substance is a chemical property.
