To answer:
The features shared by smallpox and polioviruses that helped medical science to get rid of these diseases.
Introduction:
Poliovirus is a small single-stranded RNA virus that spread from person to person via the oral route. Poliovirus infection is more evident in summer because warm weather supports the spread of this virus. Smallpox is a disease caused by the variola virus. It is a large virus with double-stranded DNA. The virus is transmitted by inhaling the virus from oral or droplets from an infected person. One-third of the people with smallpox died from the disease.

- Figure 17.5 Which of the following statements about virus structure is true? a. All viruses are encased in a viral membrane. b. The capsomere is made up of small protein subunits called capsids. c. DNA is the genetic material in all viruses. d. Glycoproteins help the virus attach to the host cell.arrow_forwardFigure 17.6 Influenza virus is packaged in a viral envelope, which fuses with the plasma membrane. This way, the virus can exit the host cell without killing it. What advantage does the virus gain by keeping the host cell alive?arrow_forwardWhich came first virus or man? Why viruses infect humans the way they do?arrow_forward
- What is the basic classification of viruses. In other words, if you find a new virus, what is the first thing to determine? Â A. Is this a DNA or an RNA virus? Â B. Does it cause blue snotty nosed fever? Â C. does it have a vector? Â D. does it infect humans?arrow_forwardWhy does it take more than a week before a mosquito just infected with yellow fever virus can transmit the disease?arrow_forwardEach year, hundreds of millions of people get sick from diseases like Zika, Dengue Fever, and Yellow Fever that are spread by mosquitoes. Some scientists are investigating the possibility of curbing these mosquito-borne diseases by genetically modifying the mosquitoes, such that they become less able to either reproduce or to carry the disease-causing microbes. Should genetically modified mosquitoes be released into the environment to combat these viruses?arrow_forward
- In Europe, for several centuries, measles has been a childhood infection that rarely kills. When European settlers came to the New World, however, the measles virus they brought with them killed a large portion of native populations. Explain.arrow_forwardHow much time does it take for a flu pandemic to infect people all around the world?arrow_forwardBecause viruses lack some of the traits seen in all living things, many scientists do not believe viruses to be genuinely "alive." Using a few characteristics of live organisms as examples, explain why viruses may not be truly "alive."arrow_forward
- The Ebola epidemic spread to ten countries, but it never officially became what is known as a pandemic. What are the differences between the two terms?arrow_forward2.4 SARS-CoV-2 is mainly transmitted through respiratory droplets when an infected person sneezes, coughs, or talks. How might this relate to the size and/or structure of viruses?arrow_forwardIn a recent influenza epidemic, physicians were utilizing a rapid diagnostic test to determine which patients were infected with influenza type A, type B, or not infected with influenza virus. Such a test was not available in the massive 1918 outbreak that killed millions of people around the globe. How might the availability of such a test have impacted that outbreak, and why?arrow_forward
