The tree basic categories of material removal process are conventional machining, abrasive process and non-traditional process.

In conventional machining the materials are mechanically cut by sharp cutting tools to get the required shape. In abrasive process hard, abrasive particles are used to remove material mechanically. In non-traditional method tools except sharp cutting tools, abrasive particles and energy forms like mechanical, thermal and chemical energies are used for the material removal process.
