The DNA replication process begins at a specific site on the circular chromosome that is referred to as the replication origin. From this site, the synthesis of the new strands occurs bidirectionally.
The site at which the new deoxyribonucleotide is added to the growing daughter strand is called the replication fork. The replication fork can be illustrated as follows:
The activities of DNA replication begin at the replication fork the moment DNA opens up and binds with different kinds of enzymes and proteins that facilitate the replication such as topoisomerase, helicase, and primase.
