Answer to Problem 20.56P

The pH value is 1.1.

Explanation of Solution

Given: 0.50MH2SO3(aq).

The given acid is diprotic acid. The concentration of species, HSO3-(aq) after first dissociation is as follows,

                        H2SO3(aq) + H2O(l)   HSO3-(aq) +  H3O+(aq)Initial              0.50                                      0                     0Change              -x                                       +x                  +xEquilibrium     0.50-x                                +x                  +xKa = [HSO3-][H3O+][H2SO3]

   pKa1 of H2SO3 = 1.85Ka1 of H2SO3 = 10-1.85Ka1 of H2SO3 = 0.0141

Now using the Ka1 value the concentration of HSO3-(aq) ions are determined.

    Ka = [HSO3-][H3O+][H2SO3]0.0141 =  [x]2[0.50-x]0.0141 =  [x]2[0.50]x = 0.084 = HSO3-(aq) = H3O+(aq)

Now, the concentration of hydronium ions present in solution at second dissociation is calculated as follows,

                      HSO3(aq) + H2O(l)   SO32(aq) + H3O+(aq)Initial              0.084                                   0                       0Change              -x                                     +x                    +xEquilibrium     0.084-x                            +x                    +xKa = [SO32][H3O+][HSO3]

     pKa2 of H2SO3 = 7.2Ka2 of H2SO3 = 10-7.2Ka2 of H2SO3 = 6.31×108

  Ka = [SO32][H3O+][HSO3]6.31×10-8 =  [x]2[0.084-x]6.31×10-8 =  [x]2[0.084]x = 7.28×10-5 = H3O+(aq)

The total concentration of hydronium ions present in solution is shown as follows,

    0.084 + 7.28×10-5 0.0841

The pH value is calculated as follows,

    pH = -log [H3O+]= -log [0.0841]= 1.1
