Chapter 20, Problem 24P

As compared to the models from Probs. 20.22 and 20.23, a somewhat more sophisticated model that accounts for the effect of both temperature and chloride on dissolved oxygen saturation can be hypothesized as being of the form,

o s = a 0 + f 3 ( T ) + f 1 ( c )

That is, a constant plus a third-order polynomial in temperature and a linear relationship in chloride are assumed to yield superior results. Use the general linear least-squares approach to fit this model to the data in Table P20.21. Use the resulting equation to estimate the dissolved oxygen concentration for a chloride concentration of 10 g/L at T = 20 ° C .

Consider the following two a.m. peak work trip generation models, estimated by household linear regression: T = 0.62 + 3.1 X1 + 1.4 X2            R2= 0.590        (2.3)     (7.1)       (5.9) T = 0.01 + 2.4 X1 + 1.2 Z1 + 4.0 Z2    R2= 0.598        (0.8)     (4.2)       (1.7)       (3.1) X1 = number of workers in the household X2 = number of cars in the household, Z1 is a dummy variable which takes the value 1 if the household has one car, Z2 is a dummy variable which takes the value 1 if the household has two or more cars.  Compare the two models and choose the best.  If a zone has 1000 households, of which 50% have no car, 35% have one car, and the rest have exactly two cars, estimate the total number of trips generated by this zone.  Use the preferred trip generation model and assume that each household has an average of two workers
A student wanted to study the effects of a new type of plant food on the growth of a particular type of flower. Using five different concentrations of food, the plants were then allowed to grow over a 2-month period. At the end of the 2 months, the heights of the plants were measured. A regression analysis was completed, and the relationship was found to be linear with the least squares equation of  ŷ = 3.31 + 1.37x,  where y is the height of the plant and x is the concentration of the plant food. The standard error for the slope was found to be 0.39. (a) Calculate the test statistic for a hypothesis test for the slope. (Round your answer to two decimal places.)   (b) A hypothesis test was done for the slope of the least squares regression line, and a P-value of 0.0056 was found. Which of the following conclusions is appropriate? (Use  ? = 0.05.) Fail to reject the null hypothesis and conclude that there is sufficient evidence of a linear relationship between the concentration…
