Chapter 20, Problem 3AWK
Summary Introduction

To review:

Techniques used for the analysis of a dinosaur’s DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid).

Introduction:

The DNA or genetic content of an organism essentially depicts everything about that organism. It carries all the information needed to make that organism function. Various techniques can be used to further analyze the DNA and give us information about that particular organism that might be of biological relevance and may not be available through other studies.

Dinosaur DNA might be extremely difficult to extract because they disappeared millions of years ago and that would cause the integrity of the DNA to degrade. It is quite likely that the DNA of dinosaurs found might be fragmented. Even if the intact DNA is found, it would be difficult to prove that it is from a dinosaur. Thus, if one successfully manages to get dinosaur DNA that can be analyzed, a number of techniques can be used on it in order to answer a lot of evolutionary questions.

Clearly, all humans have variations in their DNA sequences. How is it possible to sequence the human genome if every individual is unique? How was the diversity of the human genome addressed?
Even though they have several differences, a bacterium and a human cell will both contain DNA. With respect to evolution, what does this fact suggest?
If a sequence from another species showed a 96 percent sequence similarity to humans, would that species be more or less closely related to humans than chimpanzees are?
