Chapter 20, Problem 4SAQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: From the given options, identify the form of radioactive decay that would be most likely to detect which happens in the room next to the one you are currently in.

Concept Introduction: There are four types of radioactive decay: alpha decay, beta decay, gamma decay and positron decay.

Alpha decay emits alpha particle which helium nuclei.

Beta decay emits beta particles which are electrons.

Gamma decay emits gamma radiations.

The order of their ionizing power is: gamma radiation < positron = beta radiation< alpha radiation. Thus the ionizing power of gamma radiation is lowest while that of alpha radiation is highest.

The order of their penetrating power is: alpha radiation < positron = beta radiation < gamma radiation. Thus the penetrating power of alpha radiation is lowest while that of gamma radiation is highest.
