Chapter 20.2, Problem 4CC
Summary Introduction

Sulfolobus is one of the best-studied members of Crenarchaeota. Sulfolobus members are spherical, aerobic, and irregularly lobed. They can thrive in a temperature optimum of about 80 ̊ C and the pH optimum of 2-3. Thus, they are referred to as thermoacidophiles. Under oxic conditions, Sulfolobus species able to grow chemoorganotrophically and also grow chemolithoautotrophically, consuming H2S, H2, and FeS2 as electron donors and consuming oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor (though the use of ferric iron has been reported). Sulfolobus species use HP/HB cycle when growing chemolithoautotrophically and when growing chemoorganotrophically, they use the Entner-Doudoroff pathway (nonphosphorylative version), and tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA).
