Interpretation:

The temperature at which the following reaction becomes spontaneous has to be calculated using the Appendix B values.

    CaO(s)+CO2(g)CaCO3(s)

Enthalpy is the amount energy absorbed or released in a process.

The enthalpy change in a system Ηsys) can be calculated by the following equation.

  ΔHrxno = ΔH°produdcts- ΔH°reactants

Where,

  ΔH°reactants is the standard entropy of the reactants

  ΔH°produdcts is the standard entropy of the products

Entropy is the measure of randomness in the system.  Standard entropy change in a reaction is the difference in entropy of the products and reactants  (ΔS°rxn) can be calculated by the following equation.

  ΔS°rxn = S°Products- S°reactants

Where,

  S°reactants is the standard entropy of the reactants

  S°Products is the standard entropy of the products

Standard free energy is the term that is used to explain the total energy content in a thermodynamic system that can be converted into work.  The free energy is represented by the letter Go.  All spontaneous process is associated with the decrease of free energy in the system.  The equation given below helps us to calculate the change in free energy in a system.

  ΔGrxno = ΔΗrxno- TΔSrxno

Where,

  ΔGrxno is the change in standard free energy of the system

  ΔΗrxno is the change in standard enthalpy of the system

  T is the absolute temperature

  ΔSrxno is the change in entropy in the system

  ΔH°rxn =[(1molCaCO3)(ΔH°fofCaCO3)][(2molCaO)(ΔH°fofCaO)+(1molCO2)(ΔH°fofCO2)]ΔH°rxn =[(1molCaCO3)(1206.9kJ/mol)][(1molCaO)(635.1kJ/mol)+(1molCO2)(393.5kJ/mol)]ΔH°rxn =178.3kJ

Therefore, the calculated enthalpy (ΔH°rxn) value is 178.3kJ_ 

Calculation for entropy ΔS°rxn value

Standard entropy change equation is,

  ΔS°rxn = S°Products- nS°reactants

  ΔS°rxn =[(1molCaCO3)(SoofCaCO3)][(2molCaO)(S0ofCaO)+(1molCO2)(SoofCO2)]ΔS°rxn =[(1molCaCO3)(92.9J/mol×K)][(2molCaO)(38.2J/mol×K)+(1molCO2)(213.7J/mol×K)]ΔS°rxn =159.0J/K(or)ΔS°rxn =0.159kJ/K

The entropy change is expected to be negative because in gaseous is reactant.

Therefore, the entropy (ΔS°rxn) value is 0.159kJ/K_

The standard free energy equation is,

Calculated enthalpy and entropy value are plugging equation (1),
