Chapter 21, Problem 12TY
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Telomeres are stretches of repeated nucleotide sequences at the chromosomal ends that prevent the degradation of chromosomal genes over time. As the enzymes involved in replication are not capable of replicating the ends, stretches from the ends are lost at every cycle of replication. So, when telomere is used up from the chromosome, cell division starts losing away the left-out chromosome portion leading to a huge loss in genetic information and finally seizing the process of cell division.

Telomeres help prevent unnecessary cell death by preventing DNA monitoring activity at the staggered ends of DNA   c. Telomeres restore the length of lagging DNA strands in germ cells   d. Telomeres offer some protection against the unavoidable shortening of genes
A. Which genes could be used to monitor the process of the disease? B. If you worked for a drug company developing a treatment for the cancer, which genes would you target to turn on in cancer cells? C. Which genes would you target to turn off in cancer cells?
