Concept explainers
To review:
The individuals those are present in the given tree and consistent with being the source of the infection cluster.
Given:
All the individuals that are marked CC01–CC08 and are known to have engaged in sex. These represent an epidemiological cluster in Figure 1 below.
Figure 1: Epidemiological cluster
Introduction:
A phylogenetic tree is used to show the history of the evolution of species, genes, and populations. These trees are based on the biochemical attributes, physical structures, and behavior of the genes. Nowadays, the genomes of many organisms are available that help the biologists to construct the trees with much more details.
Explanation of Solution
As per the given Figure 1, the individual label CC01 is consistent with becoming the source of infection. This is based on the observation, as this label CC01 shows the similarity with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) sequence. Here, the analysis of this label shows its closer resemblance to HIV sequence that is present in all the other individuals. It should not be done with the single individual sequence samples only.
So, it can be concluded that the viruses from CC01 are found across the tree. This virus is found consistent, which is transmitted from one individual to another.

- According to the recent malaria report of the Department of Health, Disease and Prevention Bureau (2022), there are 4, 251 confirmed cases of malaria in the Philippines and majority of the cases are due to Plasmodium falciparum.
