Chapter 21, Problem 21.23P

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Exact mass of 12C813CH17N5Cl+  with m/z value of 230.1164 has to be computed.

Concept Introduction:

Molecular mass is defined as mass corresponding to mass of one molecule of substance, while nominal mass may be defined as mass of most abundant isotope of a particular ion or molecule. For instance carbon exist as two isotopes C-12 and C-13. C-12 is abundant as much as 98.9 % while abundance of C-13 is only 1.1 %. So clearly nominal mass of carbon is 12 g.

For instance molecular mass of benzene is calculated by exact atomic masses of C and H atom as follows:

  Molecular mass of C6H6=(6)(12.0107 u)+(6)(1.0078 u)=78.111 u

However its nominal mass will take most abundant masses of C and H atoms into account and thus nominal mass is calculated as follows:

  Nominal mass of C6H6=(6)(12 u)+(6)(1 u)=78 u

Explanation of Solution

Assume most abundant isotope are used for each atom in 12C9H17N5Cl+, mass of this ion is calculated as follows:

  12C9H17N5Cl+=9(12)+17(1.007825)+5(14.00307)+(34.96885)0.00055=230.11668

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Exact mass of 12C813CH17N5Cl+ has to be computed and expected intensity of peak at  m/z value of 231 has to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

Refer to part (a).

Explanation of Solution

Since one carbon has been replaced by 13C, exact mass of 12C813CH17N5Cl+ ion is calculated as follows:

  12C813CH17N5Cl+=[8(12)+1(13.003)+17(1.007825)+5(14.003)+(34.968)0.00055]=231.12003

Hence mass of 12C9H17N535Cl+ is 232.11373.

Observed intensity of peaks with m/z value of 231.1188 is 11.7 % so corresponding relative intensity is calculated as follows:

  Relative intensity=11.7 %10011.7 %=0.1325:1

Expected intensity for peak with  m/z value of 231 relative to m/z value of 230 is then calculated as follows:

  Expected intensity11.7 %=0.13251Expected intensity=9.88 %9.9 %

Thus, expected intensity is 9.9 %.

Explanation of Solution

Exact mass of 12C9H17N535Cl+ ion is calculated as follows:

  12C9H17N535Cl+=[9(12)+17(1.007825)+5(14.003)+(36.96590)0.00055]=232.11373

Hence mass of 12C9H17N535Cl+ is 232.11373.
