The vital capacity is defined as the maximum amount of the air expelled by a person after a maximum inhalation. It is the sum of the of inspiratory reserve volume, tidal volume, and expiratory reserve volume. The vital capacity is maximum at the age of 20-25 years, when the lungs and respiratory muscle strength is well developed. After this, aging is associated with the functioning of the lungs and vital capacity decline with the age.
