Chapter 2.1, Problem 56E
Complete Classification. In Exercises 49–56, determine whether the data described are qualitative or quantitative and also identify their level of measurement. If the data are quantitative, state whether they are continuous or discrete, and give a brief explanation.
- 56. Clinical Trial. In a clinical trial of a new drug, subjects are placed in groups as follows: Subjects in Group 1 are each given a placebo containing none of the drug; subjects in Group 2 are each given 10-mg doses of the drug; subjects in Group 3 are each given 20-mg doses of the drug; subjects in Group 4 are each given 50-mg doses of the drug. Consider the group numbers (1, 2, 3, 4) and also consider the drug amounts (0 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, and 50 mg).

Meghan is a psychology major who is testing a maze for a group of mice to navigate. In order for it to be productive for a class project, she would like the average time for a mouse to complete the maze to be 90 seconds. She randomly selects 28 mice and has each mouse complete the maze. Meghan records the time, in seconds, that each mouse needed to complete the maze. The results are provided in the accompanying data table. Based on research and previous results, Meghan assumes that the population is normally distributed and the population standard deviation is 5.80 seconds.
Use Excel to test whether the mean amount of time a mouse completes the maze is 90 seconds, and then draw a conclusion in the context of the problem, where α=0.10.

The table shows a portion of the data for a sample of 51 private colleges and universities. The data include the name of the college or university, the year the institution was founded, the tuition and fees (not including room and board) for the most recent academic year, and the percentage of full-time, first-time bachelor’s degree-seeking undergraduate students who obtain their degree in 6 years or less (The World Almanac).
A. Prepare a scatter diagram to show the relationship between Tuition & Fees (in USD 1000s , on the horizontal axis) and % Graduate (on the vertical axis).
