The amino acids that are not produced by the human body and must be obtained through diet are called essential amino acids. Good dietary sources for essential amino acids are meat, eggs, tofu, and buckwheat. Out of a total of 20 amino acids needed by the body, there are 9 essential amino acids. The nine essential amino acids are lysine, histidine, threonine, methionine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan.
