Portland, Oregon had developed its urban areas in a more sustainable manner. Some of the ways were improving the energy efficiencies and depending on natural energy sources for electricity and heating, improving vegetation and developing biodiversity parks, and using low-polluting transport services.

Explanation of Solution

Some of the important measures adopted by Portland, Oregon to become a more sustainable city are as enlisted below:

1. (i) Improving energy efficiencies and relying on solar energy, wind, and the geothermal energy for electricity, cooling, and heating.
2. (ii) The urban cities also were filled with vegetation and biodiversity parks.
3. (iii) The usage of low-polluting transport also helped in the development of the eco-city.

Portland had employed smart growth approaches and strong land-use policies for controlling growth, reducing reliance on automobiles, and preserving green space. They encouraged the establishment of mixed-use neighborhoods with stores, professional offices, light industries, high-density housing, and admission to mass transit. This enabled most of the people to meet many of their everyday needs without a car. Moreover, the municipal solid wastes were recycled and composted. A Climate Action Plan was implemented to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide.
