What property of oil does the SAE ratings reflect?
Mention the property of oil defined by the SAE ratings.
Explanation of Solution
Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) rating:
SAE rating rates motor oils based on their viscosity. Most engine oils are sold with the SAE grade number. The viscosity of the oil determines the effectiveness and burning rate of the oil. Higher the SAE rating of the oil, higher will be the viscosity of the oil.
The vehicle manufacturers suggest the following viscosity engine oils:
- SAE 0W-16
- SAE 0W-20
- SAE 5W-20
- SAE 5W-30
Therefore, viscosity is the property of oil defined by the SAE ratings.
