Interpretation:

The following observation has to be explained.

    “When deoxyhemoglobin crystals are exposed to oxygen they shatter.  On the other hand deoxymyoglobin crystals are unaffected by oxygen.”

Concept Introduction:

Hemoglobin is a globular protein.  It consists of four sub-units.  Hemoglobin binds to oxygen and transports it to various organs in our body for their proper biological functioning.  When O2 is bound to oxygen then it is called oxyhemoglobin and when O2 is released it is deoxyhemoglobin.

Myoglobin is also a globular protein and it consists of only one unit. It stores oxygen in muscle cells.
