Chapter 22, Problem 2CTS
Summary Introduction
To describe:
The point of development where the developing organism becomes human.
Introduction:
The human development is divided mainly into three phases germinal, embryonic and fetal. The germinal development is referred to the pre zygotic phase, after the formation of zygote up to 10th week it is referred as embryo and from 11th week to parturition, it is referred as fetal.

The development of a zygote into a baby involves pre-embryonic development for the first 2 weeks, followed by embryonic development for the next 6 weeks, and finally fetal development until the baby is born. When is the developing baby considered a fetus?
Select one:
a. When all major organ systems have formed
b. After the neural tube forms
c. Once gastrulation is complete
d. When most major organ systems have formed; the neural system forms during the fetal stage
From what you know about embryonic development, do you think that a cell from the inner cell mass or one from the ectoderm has more developmental potential?
People could observe the development of an embryo before they had the tools to see cells and parts of cells such as DNA. How do you think they explained the development from embryo to organism?

- The development of sex and gender is a good example of a developmental cascade because: Group of answer choices Although having an X and a Y chromosome at conception typically leads to the development of testes during prenatal development, this may not lead to typical male genitalia if certain hormones are present later in development Two people may have the same gonads early in prenatal development but end up with different external genitalia and gender identities as a result of differences in the prenatal environment All of the options listed here are correct Having two X chromosomes at conception typically leads to the development of ovaries during prenatal development, which typically leads to high levels of estrogen in puberty, which typically leads to a female gender identity in adulthoodarrow_forwardIn-vitro fertilization occurs in the laboratory. The resulting embryos remain in a laboratory culture for up to six days before being transferred to the potential mother. But according to new research, though identical twins share very similar genes, identical they are not. The discovery opens a new understanding of why two people who hail from the same embryo can differ in phenotype (physical characteristics), as biologists refer to a person’s physical manifestation. The new findings appear in the March issue of The American Journal of Human Genetics, in a study conducted by scientists at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and universities in Sweden and the Netherlands. The scientists examined the genes of 10 pairs of monozygotic, or identical, twins, including 9 pairs in which one twin showed signs of dementia or Parkinson’s disease and the other did not. It has long been known that identical twins develop differences that result from the environment. And in recent years, it has also…arrow_forward
