Question
Chapter 22, Problem 2TOF
Summary Introduction
To Determine:
If the given statement is true or false.
Introduction:
In negative selection, B cells and T cells recognize the MHC molecules that are bound to the peptide chains of self-origin. This means that the immune system eliminates those B cells and T cells that can attack the cells of host's body. This negative selection occurs in the bone marrow and the thymus.

If the thymus of an adult experimental animal is removed, the following observations can be made: (a) No immediate effect occurs, and (b) after 1 year, decreases occur in the number of lymphocytes in the blood, the ability to reject grafts, and the ability to produce antibodies. Explain these observations.
The selection process for T cells is more complex than B cells. Please explain the process, why it is more complex, and how/why autoreactive T cells are allowed to leave the thymus.
