Chapter 22, Problem 56GP
Wires aren’t really ideal. The voltage drop across a current-carrying wire can be significant unless the resistance of the wire is quite low. Suppose a 50 ft extension cord is being used to provide power to an electric lawn mower. The cord carries a 10 A current. The copper wire in a typical extension cord has a 1.3 mm diameter. What is the voltage drop across a 50 ft length of wire at this current?

(a) If the wire carries a current of 3.38 A, find the drift speed (in m/s) of electrons in the wire. (Take the density of mobile charge carriers in copper to be n = 1.10 ✕ 1029 electrons/m3.)
???m/s
(b) For the same wire size and current, find the drift speed (in m/s) of electrons if the wire is made of aluminum with n = 2.11 ✕ 1029 electrons/m3.

A 580 mm long tungsten wire, with a 0.048 mm diameter circular cross section, is wrapped around in the shape of a coil and used as a filament in an incandescent light bulb. When the light bulb is connected to a battery, a current of 0.536 A is measured through the filament. Tungsten has a resistivity of 4.9 x 10-8 Ohms x m. How many electrons pass through this filament in 5 seconds? What is the resistance of this filament? What is the voltage of the battery that would produce this current in the filament?
