Chapter 22, Problem 5CT

Some desperate cancer patients consume pills or other preparations containing shark cartilage, which the manufacturers tout as an anti-angiogenesis compound. The basis for these claims is the fact that blood vessels do not grow into cartilage. Responsible researchers point out that, regardless of the properties of cartilage, there is no way that eating it could provide any anticancer benefit. Why is this counterargument correct?

Fibroblasts are motile cells that “creep” about in the connective tissue of the body where they play a number of roles, including secretion of the extracellular matrix and initiating certain wound healing events.  These cells do not usually have microvilli nor do they express the actin-binding protein villin; both of these properties are characteristic of certain epithelial cells, such as those lining the intestine and kidneys. Remarkably enough, however, if one artificially engineers fibroblast cells to produce the villin protein, microvilli form on the fibroblasts. Given what you know about the function of villin, why might this striking change in cell morphology occur?
The extra cellular matrix (ECM) of bone is considered to be a composite material made up of organic and inorganic matter. What makes up the organic and inorganic portions of the matrix? How does the cell you described in question #8 break down this matrix?
Disorders of collagen are characterized by deterioration of connective tissues. Why would such diseases produce widely varying symptoms?
