Chapter 22, Problem 5U
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

The evolutionary changes occurring in a species and the process of speciation are related processes. Two hypotheses: Gradualism and punctuated equilibrium, have been given to explain the relationship between speciation and the evolutionary changes.

Gradualism suggests that the changes due to evolution occurred very slowly and gradually through the time and is not associated with speciation. Whereas, punctuated equilibrium suggests that the phenotypic changes occurred rapidly due to speciation, which were separated by very long duration of little or no change.

What is an Analogy? A) When an anatomic feature is shared among organisms and their descendants B) When two organisms appear the same C) When convergent evolution produces similar phenotypes
Researchers have found fossils of Eocene horse species in Colorado. Deeper deposits contain smaller species, and more recent deposits contain larger species. How does this observation support the theory of evolution?   A. It provides evidence that species change over time.   B. It does not support the theory of evolution.   C. It shows that all species are related to each other.   D. It proves that environments have changed over time.   E. It suggests that species are unchanging and of recent origin.
According to the punctuated equilibria model,(A) given enough time, most existing species will branchgradually into new species.(B) most new species accumulate their unique features relatively rapidly as they come into existence, then changelittle for the rest of their duration as a species.(C) most evolution occurs in sympatric populations.(D) speciation is usually due to a single mutation.
